Selling solar power in Spain: compensación de excedentes explained

What happens to the solar electricity you don't use, and how to get the most from it on your bill.

What is compensación de excedentes?

It is the Spanish scheme for home solar surplus. Electricity your panels export to the grid is valued each month and deducted from the energy part of your bill.

You need a legalised installation registered as autoconsumo con excedentes acogido a compensación. We handle this paperwork as part of every install.

How much is surplus worth?

Exported power is valued at a lower price than you pay to import it, and the price depends on your tariff (PVPC or a fixed tariff from your supplier). That is why using your own solar directly is always worth more than exporting it.

The credit can reduce the energy charge but not normally the fixed standing charge or below zero, although some suppliers offer a virtual battery that carries unused credit forward.

Choosing a tariff

Compare suppliers on both the price you pay and the price they give for surplus. A tariff with a slightly higher import price but a much better export price can suit homes that export a lot, such as holiday homes.

Battery or export?

If you export a lot during the day and import in the evening, a battery usually saves more than the export credit pays. If you are away for long periods, exporting with a virtual battery may be the better choice.
